Fluoride

Your child maintains good oral hygiene habits by brushing twice a day, flossing regularly, and visiting the dentist every six months. However, it’s important to know that rinsing with fluoride can further contribute to maintaining healthy and strong teeth while preventing cavities and tooth decay.

Fluoride is highly effective in cavity prevention and tooth decay by creating a protective coating on the teeth, inhibiting the buildup and hardening of plaque on the tooth’s surface.

There are two types of fluoride: systemic and topical. Systemic fluoride is typically obtained through ingesting fluoridated water, which strengthens tooth enamel during the development of teeth beneath the gums. This makes the enamel more resilient and resistant to cavities. On the other hand, topical fluoride is directly applied to the teeth in the mouth to prevent cavities. It can be found in toothpaste, mouthwash, and professional fluoride applications. Dentists may also use topical fluoride foam or varnish to provide additional protection against cavities.

Undergoing a fluoride treatment at the dentist’s office is a quick procedure that only takes a few minutes. After the treatment, it is advisable for patients to refrain from rinsing, eating, or drinking for at least 30 minutes to allow the fluoride to be absorbed by the teeth. The frequency of fluoride treatments, whether every three, six, or 12 months, depends on your child’s oral health and your dentist’s recommendation. In some cases, your dentist may prescribe at-home fluoride products such as mouthwash, gels, or antibacterial rinses.

When selecting an at-home fluoride product like toothpaste or mouthwash, it is essential to look for the American Dental Association’s (ADA) seal of acceptance. Products bearing this seal have undergone thorough examination and received ADA’s approval based on their safety and effectiveness.
